Dear Diary,

The day started out with a leftover breakfast burrito from Sarita’s the day before. Right on time, Casey was in the driveway and off we dashed to Hollywood Sports Park for a day of pump paintball action. Diary, this was my first visit to this legendary park. I’ve heard a lot negative feedback from many of my colleagues but I’m a man who forms his own opinions (mostly). So I’ll judge for myself.

We arrived at HSP right on time. A little about this tournament: it’s run by Blitz, a Los Angeles-based pump team. And, yes, an AF-sponsored team as well. The format is based on the PSP format with 4-man teams. I know, Diary, it’s a bit of an odd format for pump. But you know what? It actually works very well. Another oddity is that the field is NPPL-size but cut in half which made for very fast and exciting games.

I got to catch up with some peeps I haven’t seen in awhile like the boys from TPG, PB Gateway, Kamandag and, of course, Blitz. Also saw the usual suspects from Semi leagues and the interview of the day was with Joel Buffington’s (PB Gateway) shoe. Fight of the day went to Blake Yarber’s (Team GAT) beagle (???) and every other dog at the park. Overall it was a great day of shooting and hanging with my pump buddies.

The top teams were #1 PB Gateway NV-2, #2 Team GAT, #3 LA HITMEN and #4 Kamandag. Congratulations guys and we’ll see you at the next event.

Oh yes, Diary. I nearly forgot. Final verdict: HSP is a VERY COOL venue. Thumbs up from the AF end.

XOXOXO,
John

Thanks for reading my diary. I know you don’t really care about my thoughts or feelings. You just want to look at pictures. So here…

Dear Diary,

The day started out with pancakes and a tall glass of milk made by yours truly. I had a ride along this time – BCoOL’s coach wanting to tag along to check out the action. There were two teams I went up to support – Urban Saints, who not only was the recent winner of the D-League Event One but also holds the distinction of being the first team AF has ever sponsored, AND a new team comprised of some of my buddies, Gnar Kill.

The weather was great – cool in the morning, then warming up nicely towards the afternoon. Action on the field was very fast-paced and impressive. There was a good amount of out of state teams in attendance. I ran into an old friend – Dezhay Caraway of Velocity Wrecking Crew D2 from many moons ago. Diary, has the paintball bug bitten the young lad once again? He was hinting at maybe trying out for the Ironmen but who knows?

Funny thing. Anthony from Gnar Kill called me on Saturday night to tell me to bring the AF banner. I thought, “Well that’s a little cocky,” but whaddya know. Gnar Kill up and took 1st. That’ll teach me to doubt.

As far as who took first, it went like this: D2 – UXP Tombstone, D3 – Genesis, and D4 SDK/GK (Gnar Kill). Congratulations guys and I’ll see you at the next event.

XOXOXOXOXO,
John

Congratulations to our friends GNARKILL!!!

Yes, they killed, taking first place at RPL #2 this weekend at Camp Pendleton. But these are some of the nicest guys you’ll ever meet. And we’re proud that they sport the AF name. Well done, gentlemen!

And for the rest of you, stay tuned for our full coverage of the event, featuring photos, video, and mayhem…

img_8802May 22, 2010 – Like biblical locusts, the heathen minion from AF descend upon a dusty plateau in southeast SD, bringing speakers and cables and various other electronic necessities to Total Combat Paintball for Union Day. There was action early on as players hustled for a chance to put their names on one of the thirty coveted cards – cards that, being blank and without any formal instruction, encouraged the more intrepid of players to scrawl strange monikers on the white canvas (seriously, though, what the **** is a “Stimpy?”).

In on-going effort to minimize cost and maximize fun, a child’s beach bucket, purportedly stolen, served as the mystic receptacle for the aforementioned amateur calling cards; previous plans for a gold-plated ball caddy were nixed due to a demonic phantom known as “the economy.” In short order, and with minimal fuss, names were drawn and the crowed was divided in to six teams.

Games were fast-paced; PSP mode was the flavor of the day, with the steady cadence interrupted, intermittently, by those who proved utterly incompetent at getting their board unlocked and out of the factory settings. The heavy-hitters from Dye, Eclipse, and Bob Long were all represented, albeit all too often in the hands of those who can substitute skill with money. Once the workings of the iPod were figured out, Bouncing Souls and Face to Face issued forth. Live commentary from the fifty was handled by a seemingly infinite supply of juvenile delinquents, and what they lacked in literary prose was balanced by their, um, youthful humor..?

[SinglePic not found]Rumor has it that Team 1 was the overall winner at the end of the day. Detailed and accurate record keeping is not always high on the list of priorities; as such, it’s somewhat unclear who exactly was on Team 1. Never mind – nothing distracts the crowd from the deterioration of organization like the hyped promotion of an impromptu one-on-one grudge match; it’s not important that the contenders know why they must battle, only that one will eventually shoot the other.

At this point the author departed from the scene, drove into the sunset, missed a turn, and toured the newer parts of Otay Ranch before escaping into oblivion.

Dear Diary,

This was my first event with my new lens! It was the best investment I’ve made in my life, and I’m super happy I got it. Due to the problems with my lens at my last event (it got shot), I had to get a new one. So I spared no expense and bought a really nice lens for paintball. Of course, this also means I’m broke.

Well, the day finally came where I had to pack up for the long trip down to SC Village for the WCPPL Event 2 tournament. I grabbed my computer and my camera, jammed some Eggos into my mouth and set off down Hellman Avenue and started my five minute drive to the field. I’d like to take this time to say that even though John has to drive for an hour and a half to come up here, my ride is worse because I have to drive on Hellman Avenue, which is probably the bumpiest road in the world.

This event seemed pretty laid back. There was beautiful California weather all weekend and it was nice to just get out of the house and watch some paintball. When the games started, I took my usual spot using John as a shield and started shooting photos.

I met up with a few familiar faces at SC. I saw my good friend Lalo reffing. I also ran into the guys from PB Gateway who ended up taking first place in D2. Congrats guys! After the win I saw Karen getting interviewed. She was totally speechless with a big smile on her face.

The only bad thing I can say about this event was the smell. On the upper field it wasn’t so bad, but the lower field was a big difference. While it doesn’t ever really smell “good” at a park surrounded by dairies and cows, that weekend they must have fed the cows something different, because it was nasty.

This was one of the better events I’ve shot. It was nice and relaxed with good paintball to shoot. This tournament has really helped me relax. Combining that with writing my diary, I feel like a completely
rejuvenated person.

<3 :) – Josh

We are mighty. We are strong. We are at events like the TCP High School Challenge on May 15, 2011.

Almost Famous MC’d the event. Played some music. Took some pictures. You know. All that good stuff.

Check out the video by Casey Cimins for proof of life. (This is his first video for Almost Famous Paintball – YOU GO GIRL.)
